The first two months of 2025 have been a long year . . . I hear you.
If you work in the federal government, I want you to know that my thoughts are with you. If you would like a bit of support, please respond to this email and I’ll do a complimentary session with you.
If you are a scholar and now your funding is gone . . . my thoughts are also with you. If you would like a bit of support, please respond to this email and I’ll do a complimentary session with you.
I’m writing this note on the day that the current President and his Vice President disgracefully tried to humiliate President Zelensky of Ukraine to hand over the minerals to the US and carried more water for Russia.
Disgraceful.
And . . . I would like us to keep track of what’s going well . . . because there are many things that are actually going well . . .
- The 50501 movement has been on fire. It stands for 50 protests, 50 states, 1 day. They have called regular protests across the country and they’re well attended. If you would like to learn more about what they’re organizing, including boycotts, here’s the website.
- Apparently 23,000,000 people are participating in the day of no spending on February 28, 2025. It’s an economic shutdown/blackout. There’s not much to do except not spend money on that day. If you must, go to small businesses that are preferably owned by Black, Latino, and Asian folk.
- The lawyers have been on fire. Eric Adams, the “Mayor” of my fabulous city went down to Maralago to get off the hook for federal corruption charges. The current head of DOJ wanted the lawyer who filed the case to sign off on dropping the charges and she not only said no, she resigned. He kept going to other lawyers . . . over ten of them. They resigned. And these aren’t lefty people. They’re members of the Federalist Society. DOJ went to court requesting dropping the charges and the judge pointedly did not do so and is appointing someone to make the case for not dropping the charges. One branch of government is still working.
- My sister won a case in Maryland where the Prosecutor was trying to convict a woman who gave birth to a baby who very may well have been stillborn on evidence that she was researching how to terminate the pregnancy early on. The court ruled that evidence was insufficient for conviction. And the brief she wrote was an amicus brief. The final decision quoted her brief extensively. Let me know if you want to read it (it’s 82 pages . . .).
This shock and awe phase is designed to keep us scared and not doing anything. And we can see that isn’t working.
Keep in mind that the administration is trying to weaken the Judge Advocate Corps . . . quoting Georgetown Law Professor Rosa Brooks: “In some ways that’s even more chilling than firing the four stars. It’s what you do when you’re planning to break the law: you get rid of any lawyers who might try to slow you down.” Read this as the possibility of turning the military on US civilians. As one who is of African heritage, I am not going publicly to protests because of my fear that the administration would declare martial law if there were too many people of my ilk in the protests. Just sayin’.
We can all do what makes sense for us. I will be involved with the blackouts and keeping my Black ass home.
What floats your boat?
Would you like some support during this time?
I want to hear about all of it.
Blessings.
Michelle
