Academics

The pressures for scholars to publish for tenure, promotions, and raises have only increased while the resources for making sure you can get that done have proportionately decreased.

How on earth is it possible to meet the requirements of a book and at least three articles (if you're in the humanities) when:

  • You have three classes every term with 30 students in them. The grading is endless. The questions your students have are also endless, and you don't have time to remember your name, not to mention your writing project for publication.
  • You are unsure what to do with this massive pile of dissertation that is clearly not a book, but you don't have a sense of what needs to happen to make it a book.
  • Between your child(ren) and aging parents, there is never enough time to have a moment of peace and quiet to remember the last step you took on your next piece of work for publication. Does everyone have to eat so much?! Can't they wear the same clothes daily?

It makes you want to run away and hide for months at a time, doesn't it? Yet, that wouldn't help your publication challenge.

There's lots to say about thinking through how to structure your time and setting priorities. And that doesn't get at the core of publication.

The core of publication is making sure that you are doing the correct elements for writing your work at the right time with the appropriate feedback.

The core of publication is creating a system that will ensure that your submission will be read and have higher chances of actually being published.

So, because there are so many things in our lives that pull us away from focusing on our work for publication, and because it would be helpful to create that system, what if you could get away from it all to make the magic happen?

Do you want to sound like the best version of you?

What if you didn't have to worry about meals?

What if you could get help when you are stuck?

What if the only bedtime you had to worry about was your own?

Resistant Vision Coaching and Consulting is doing writing retreats for scholars that allow you to do just this.

All writing retreats include the following:

  • Accommodation;

  • Meals;

  • Airport/public transportation transfers (if reasonable);

  • Someone to bounce questions you have off if you're stuck; and

  • Coffee (I know you . . . ).

You can do them individually, with a friend, or with a group.

The next group writing retreat will be on July 28 - 31, 2025 in the Adirondacks. We would love for you to join us.
